Our approach

Monks Coffee classes are a fun, jargon free, informative, hands-on introduction to specialty coffee. Learn from a professional baristas how to make exceptional coffee and master the art of espresso-making. All our classes are suited to curious newcomers and passionate home baristas as well as professionals wanting to brush up on their skills. You’ll leave with new knowledge, skills and coffee-making confidence – and some amazing beans to drink at home. See you in class!

Training Centre

Our training centre in Bilderdijkstraat offers the perfect space for barista training, workshops, systems training and educations sessions. We use the same professional equipment you will see in just about every cafe, restaurant and hotel. We can help you be the best you can be at preparing coffee drinks, improve bar workflow, implement systems, and continually hone your skills.

Aside from business specific training sessions, we run regular cupping and coffee education sessions, to keep you up to date with all that we have to offer.

Who this class is for?

Monks espresso and milk steaming class is suitable for baristas and coffee enthusiasts – whether you’re just starting out in coffee and want to learn the basics of how to make beautiful espresso and steam milk, or you’ve been making espresso drinks for a while and want to develop your skills further. This class is also popular with people who are curious about specialty coffee and want to learn more about why certain coffees taste the way they do, or simply just want to get more out of their cafe visits.

What you’ll learn

We’ll show you how we make espresso in our cafe and teach you some skills that will help you make beautiful espresso-based beverages at home. We’ll taste different extractions side by side and show you how to tweak your espresso recipes to get the most out of your beans and home equipment. We’ll also share our tips for steaming milk and show you how to pour latte art so your drinks will look as delicious as they taste! This class covers the journey of the coffee beans from harvest to roaster to cup, how to assess extraction and describe the flavours of the brew, and how to steam and pour milk.

What to expect on the day

Each coffee class has a maximum of 4 participants, so you’ll have plenty of hands-on experience making coffee, and plenty of time to ask all your coffee related questions. You’ll be making and tasting coffee throughout the session, and we’ll also send you home with Monks Coffee beans and a copy of our barista course guide which contains everything we've covered in class so you can keep up your new skills.

Filter Class

Who this class is for?

Monks Coffee filter brewing class is for anyone who is curious about making beautiful filter coffee at home, or if you’re already making coffee and want to learn more and improve your skills. When done well, filter brewing methods produce an excellent cup of coffee with great clarity of flavour. We love making and drinking filter coffee, and showing people how easy, fun and satisfying it can be. Whether you’re an absolute beginner in the world of filter coffee, or you want to develop your filter coffee technique, palate and vocabulary, this class is for you.

What you’ll learn

In this two-hour hands on class, we will explain how coffee is grown, harvested and processed before it arrives at our roastery, and how to use the information on a bag of beans to choose the coffee you’ll love the most! We’ll be spending most of our time brewing and tasting coffees together, and you’ll learn how to make coffee using the V60, Chemex pour over methods and also Clever Dripper and Aeropress immersion methods. We’ll talk about how we assess a brew and find accurate flavour descriptors for a coffee, and you’ll learn how to adjust the recipes to make your coffee taste just the way you like it.

What to expect on the day

This fun, hands-on class has a maximum of four participants. We’ll spend most of the session making coffee, and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion of tips and different methods for coffee brewing. You can drink as much coffee as you like during the class, and we’ll send you home with a bag of Monks Coffee beans and a copy of our brew guide which covers what you learned so you can keep up your new skills at home.
